Infrastructure

Infrastructure user interface enables management of physical and virtual Thunder devices. A cluster is a logical container of one or more Thunder devices. In the Infrastructure tab you can create clusters and add devices, and provision these resources to tenants for service deployment.

You can monitor lifecycle state and key resource configuration metrics of deployed devices and execute device license and image upgrade operations. You can also manage device configurations, create and backup configurations.

Harmony Controller supports dynamic instantiation or deploy of vThunder service devices in VMware managed datacenter infrastructure.

Device Management or Managing Thunder Devices

Following procedures should be carried out in sequence for setting-up infrastructure:

  1. Adding a Cluster
  2. Adding a Device
  3. Adding a Credential
  4. Adding a Virtual Device

Before You Begin

Keep the following information handy as this will be needed to carry out the procedure for adding an existing Thunder device or deploying a new virtual device:

  1. VMware vCenter IP address

The IP address of the vCenter host which Harmony Controller will use to connect to the vCenter for infrastructure resource discovery and vThunder instantiation.

  2. User Name and Password

User name and password of the vCenter user account. Please ensure that the user account has administrative privileges or privileges to read infrastructure resources and deploy virtual machines.

  3. Thunder IP address

IP address of pre-existing Thunder device which Harmony Controller uses to connect with the device.

  4. Admin User Name and password

Thunder administrator user name and password. This needs to be provided on Adding a Cluster or Adding a Device screen.

  5. vThunder Images or VM Templates

Harmony Controller requires vThunder images to pre-exist as VM templates in the vCenter content library. These templates are discovered during infrastructure resource discovery for deploying of a new vThunder instance. Ensure that vThunder images (ovf file + disk image) are preloaded in the vCenter content library and are accessible to the user account used for creating a credential.

  6. Infrastructure Resource Object Hierarchy

All resources modeled in vCenter are represented by vCenter objects and user permissions are inherited by objects in the hierarchy.

  7. Network Interface information

Deploying a new virtual device also requires mapping information for three network interface:

    1. Management / eth0
    2. Data / eth1 and
    3. Data / eth2.

You will need to provide IP address, subnet mask and gateway information for all three interfaces.

Clusters

You can add a cluster, add cluster partition, provision clusters or perform cluster upgrade and edit or delete the clusters.

Adding a Cluster

To add a cluster, follow the below steps:

  1. Click Infrastructure > Clusters.

  2. Click Add a Cluster.

    _images/add_cluster_info.png
  3. Select the type either single, VCS or HA based on your Thunder device(s) configuration, provide cluster name and description to the cluster.

Note: For VCS type cluster you need to provide the floating IP and master blade information.

For HA type cluster you need to enter the details of every device in HA along with the cluster set ID. Also you need to specify the primary HA device by using the HA primary toggle button across that device.

  4. Provide the device name, Thunder IP address, enter the data center or zone, country or region and location.

  5. Enter the admin user name and password and click Save.

  6. To edit the cluster, select image_reference and click Edit.

    _images/edit_cluster.png
  7. To delete the cluster, you need to first de-register all the devices in the cluster and select image_reference and click Delete.

Provisioning the Cluster

Before You Begin

Ensure to have atleast one tenant defined in Harmony Controller. To add a tenant, refer to

To associate tenants to cluster partition, follow the below steps:

  1. Click Infrastructure > Clusters.

    _images/add_cluster.png
  2. Select the cluster, select image_reference and select Provision.

    _images/provision.png

Note: Make sure the partitions are available to associate tenants.

  3. You can bulk provision by selecting bulk apply, where multiple partitions are applied to a particular tenant and click Provision.

    _images/provision_bulk.png
  4. You can also apply a single partition to a particular tenant and click Provision.

Performing Cluster Upgrade

Before You Begin

Make sure the ACOS image is available under Infrastructure image upgrade page.

To perform cluster upgrade, follow the below steps:

  1. Click Infrastructure > Clusters.

    _images/add_cluster.png
  2. Select the cluster, select image_reference and select Image Upgrade.

    _images/image_upgrade.png
  3. Select an image to upgrade and select one or multiple target clusters.

    _images/image_upgrade_target.png
  4. Select the drive, disk and provide a description.

  5. Toggle to enable Save config before upgrade and Reboot after upgrade.

  6. Click Upgrade.

Devices

You can add a cluster, add cluster partition, provision clusters or perform cluster upgrade and edit or delete the clusters.

Adding a Device

To connect or add a new device, follow the below steps:

  1. Click Infrastructure > Devices.

    _images/add_device.png
  2. Click Add Device.

    _images/add_new_device.png
  3. Select a cluster, provide a device name, Thunder IP address, enter the data center or zone, country or region and location.

Note: A cluster needs to be available or free to connect to a device.

  4. Enter the admin user name and password and click Next.

  5. To edit the device, select image_reference and click Edit.

    _images/edit_device.png
  6. To delete the device, select image_reference and click Delete.

  7. To de-register a device, select image_reference and click De-register and select Yes.
